What Causes Varicose Veins?

what causes varicose veins in legs - Vein Clinic Perth

The Main Causes of Varicose Veins in Legs

A summary of what causes bulging or varicose veins:

  • The valves in your veins are weakened and stop working so normal circulation is impaired and blood pools in the veins of your legs.
  • Age: it increases the risk of vein problems.
  • Hereditary factors: if both your parents have had bulging veins you have a 90% chance of developing symptoms.
  • Being overweight.
  • Being pregnant.
  • Standing for long periods of time with increased pressure on your leg veins.

If you have any varicose vein pain or symptoms such as swollen veins, it is useful to look into the new varicose vein treatment methods, such as laser for varicose veins.

How to get Rid of Varicose Veins?

In Subiaco, at Perth Vein Clinic, Doctor Luke Matar offers WA’s largest variety of treatments for vein conditions, and has a particular expertise in minimally invasive treatments for varicose veins and spider veins.  At The Vein Clinic, we understand that suffering from enlarged veins right underneath the skin, may affect your ability to wear short clothing, and to fully enjoy the Perth lifestyle. But it may also cause more health problems down the track if left untreated.

That is why we have established our vein removal centre in Subiaco, conveniently located next to the TransPerth train station.

We offer the most effective and least invasive treatments for varicose veins including:

What is Venous Reflux?

Venous Reflux occurs when the valves in your leg veins designed to return blood to the heart fail and become “leaky”. This causes disruption of the normal circulation and pooling of blood in the legs. The resultant back pressure causes progressive dilatation of your veins and the development of swollen twisted branch veins otherwise known as varicose veins.

Do I need Vein Surgery?

When you see the visual symptoms of venous reflux (swollen, bulging veins right under your skin), a specialised Doppler ultrasound scan performed at the vein clinic is recommended to accurately diagnose the underlying vein problem. If left untreated, a vein condition may lead to leg swelling and oedema, or inflammation in your veins and venous eczema, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), ulceration, skin discolouration and thickening.

New and innovative vein treatments now allow you to avoid a stay in hospital. Minimally invasive treatments and non-surgical vein treatments are now widely recognised as the gold standard of care and are performed on a “walk in – walk out” basis at The Vein Clinic often in less than 1hr.

The international community of vein experts keeps adding new research to the available scientific support and Dr Luke Matar at Vein Clinic Perth is a respected contributor to national and international conferences on vein health.

If you suffer from enlarged, swollen veins, please obtain a GP referral and speak to our friendly reception team to make a booking. Non-surgical vein treatments result in a lower downtime compared to traditional vein surgery, and they can be performed conveniently at our vein clinic in Subiaco.
